CUBA BRINGS JOY TO HAITIAN CHILDREN

PORT AU PRINCE, Feb. 6 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA): Children of the Haitian town of Croix des Bouquets, who were rescued from the rubbles of the earthquake are now laughing, singing and dancing, thanks to a project initiated by Cuban experts.

The project is designed to mitigate the psychological effects of the earthquake.

Guerlanda, Christopher and Olser, like other small and elusive returned without smiles on their lips to what was his nearest playground, now a field hospital enabled by Cuba in this village about 20 kilometers northeast of capital.

They were taken on Thursday afternoon by her parents, community leaders who convened in coordination with Cuban specialists, determined to protect infants, the sector most vulnerable population in disasters like the earthquake of Jan 12 and subsequent aftershocks that devastated Haiti.

The children have been going through a traumatic experience after the ordeal of recent days, when images of houses and schools destroyed, mutilated and missing family members or lack of food and water were stuck in the memories.

The first to speak to parents and children, was the Cuban doctor Christopher Martinez, who attended a victim of the earthquake as Creole translator explained the essence of the mitigation program of psychosocial harm young child population hit by the earthquake.

The Cuban program seeks to act in one of the edges of the individual, to the promotion of play, recreation and sport.

Cuban experts foresee extending the scheme to other areas of the country affected by the quake, including Leoganne at suoreste in Port au Prince, where 15 Haitian activists in the Community Simón Bolívar have been enlisted to draw up programmes to improve the mental health of the younger fellow citizens.
