Paintings of sorts are available at the gallery and is operated by Hj Padzil bin Hj Ahmad, a former government employee working for the Museum Department. Having participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions both locally and abroad, the owner, himself, is no stranger to the local art scene. He now teaches art to youths and although it is not a formal art lesson as it is in schools, he hopes to impart further knowledge whilst guiding them in their work.
During my visit to his gallery, I observed four talented artists attending his lessons. Their remarkable drawing skills are astounding despite their young age. Nur Azirah lets her paintings come to life with her extraordinary sketches depicting landmark buildings such as the Istana Nurul Iman, Lapau and the Royal Regalia building.
Fizah, another talented student, enjoys drawing keris, local fruits and other objects using pastel colours. According to Hj Padzil, she won a consolation prize in the primary school category during last year’s art competition held in conjunction with His Majesty, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei’s 63rd birthday celebrations.
One of the most talented is undoubtedly Amalina. She too won a consolation prize in the secondary category during His Majesty’s birthday celebrations last year. Her unique dexterity in art demonstrates her exceptional ability to paint creative pictures of various sorts.
I also met with a renowned local artist, Osman Omar who specialises in portrait drawing. He showed me his latest art work, which is the portrait of Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien.

According to Hj Padzil, he hopes that the local paintings can be exposed to the outside world. Hotels for example, should take the initiatives to promote local artists by displaying their artworks in the hotel premises. Through this, tourists and visitors will be able to enjoy the artwork of Brunei’s very own artists and appreciate their creativity and talents in art.
