NAIROBI, Feb 7 (NNN-KBC) — Coast legislators have threatened to introduce a censure motion against Kenyan Education Minister Sam Ongeri in the National Assembly if he and Permanent Secretary Karega Mutahi do not resign immediately.
Coast Parliamentary Group deputy chairman Gideon Mung’aro said the two must step aside for comprehensive investigations to be launched against them over the loss of over 100 million meant for the Free Primary Education programme.
Speaking to the press in Madunguni, Malindi district, Mung’aro said the group supports the stand by Prime Minister Raila Odinga that the two should resign to allow the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission to carry out independent investigations.
Raila intensified pressure on Ongeri and his PS to step aside during a meeting with permanent secretaries, parastatal chiefs and provincial officers held at the Kenya Institute of Administration and chaired by President Kibaki.
Elsewhere, Orange Democratic Movement legislators from Coast province have lauded the election court in Mombasa for nullifying the election of Transport Minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere as the MP for Matuga.
The legislators said the verdict on the minister vindicated the Kenyan Judiciary, which has been under intense attacks from Kenyans and the international community for alleged incompetence.
Speaking to journalists Malindi Member of Parliament, Gideon Mung’aro said for the first time, the Judiciary had shown that it had some degree of independence.
Mung’aro said the party had already laid down strategies to capture the Parliamentary seat.
Ayub Juma Mwakesi, ODM’s candidate for the Matuga seat in 2007 had petitioned the court to nullify the election outcome saying the elections were not free and fair. — NNN-KBC![]()
