KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Thirty-four Iranians are among 39 people detained by the Malaysian authorities in connection with the seizure of shabu worth about 10.5 million Ringgit (one USD = about 3.345 Ringgit), over the past two months.
Also seized were 225,850, Ringgit believed to be proceeds from the sale of the 42 kg of drugs, believed to have been smuggled in from Iran, via Dubai, the Director of the Federal Anti-Narcotics Department of the Royal malaysia Police, Zulhasnan Najib Baharudin, told a press conference here Monday.
The 39 suspects were nabbed in 11 separate cases at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, at a luxury residence and in a five-star hotel, he said.
Apart from the Iranians, the others arrested comprised three locals, a Filipina and a Singaporean. The suspects, aged between 15 and 58, included a couple and their daughter.
They are being investigated under Section 39 B of Malaysia’s Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
Zulhasnan said there were several ways in which shabu was smuggled into the country.
They included swallowing containers containing syabu before retrieving them via excreta, concealing the drug in luggage or in hair spray cannisters.
Zulhasnan believed that the seized shabu was meant for sale in Malaysia and to ready buyers in other countries.
Last year, the police arrested 24 Iranians in connection with the seizure of 17 kg of syabu.
