MANAGUA, Feb 10 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – The opposition failed to push an amensty move to free corruption officials when the session in Parliament here was suspended for lack of quorum.
If it becomes law, it would clean all the judicial files of about one hundred public officials that occupied their posts from April 25, 1990 to Jan 9, 2007, the period covering the neoliberal governments of ex-presidents Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, Arnoldo Aleman Lacayo and Enrique Bolaños Geyer.
The political groups supporting the project, headed by the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista and the Movement Vamos con Eduardo, could not gather in Parliament yesterday the necessary quorum of deputies ready to support the amnesty.
Only two leaders of the opposition were registered in the electronic board to participate in the debate, despite members of the Executive and a large number of deputies were present.
Following the situation, the President of the National Assembly, the Sandinist Rene Nuñez, suspended the session, but according to the agenda approved the issue could be again approached later today or tomorrow.
What took place yesterday indicated the opposition has still not gathered the number of votes required to approve the bill, commented several deputies.
While this took place in the legislative , thousands of people gathered in the surroundings of the parliamentary building to protest against the attempt by the opposition to give an amnesty to the corrupt ex-officials.
The people had been summoned to maintain their massive presence around the Assembly to reject the opposition’s move recalled deputies of the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberacion Nacional party. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
