FIFTY of Brunei Darussalam’s relentless firefighters will march for 50 kilometres on March 9 to mark the Fire and Rescue Department’s 50th anniversary, as a testament to the department’s commitment to duty and country, which knows no fatigue.
“The ‘FR (Fire & Rescue) Endurance’ march symbolises the department’s mission to carry out its duty during emergencies, no matter how tiring, for the sake of saving lives and property,” Noorzali, a public relations officer from the department told The Brunei Times yesterday.
A rehearsal for the FR Endurance march was held last evening, and also served as a training session to prepare the firefighters for the actual event.
The march began at around 9pm and was expected to last until 7am today. The march will take place at around the same time for the actual event.
Starting off from the fire station in the capital, with police escorts on motorcycles to manage traffic, the group will march through areas such as the Hassanal Bolkiah highway, Tungku Link as well as roads in Bandar, to reach their final destination of the Fire and Rescue Department headquarters at Old Airport.
A total of 10 checkpoints have been designated along the way.
The march involves 37 male and 13 female Fire and Rescue personnel.
“Endurance is a compulsory trait within each and every personnel for them to carry out their duties,” said Noorzali.
This was the first time that such an activity has been held by the Fire and Rescue Department, and the length of the journey and the number of participants was chosen to coincide with the department’s celebrations of its golden jubilee.
