RAMALLAH, Feb 18 (NNN-KUNA) — The German mediation efforts on the prisoners swap deal between Hamas and Israel will be resumed, said the Israeli television.
Channel 2 of the Israeli television said that German mediator Gerhard Conrad will arrive in Tel Aviv in a few days to discuss a new Israeli offer he presented to Hamas six weeks ago.
The channel quoted Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as saying that the new offer will be the last proposed by Israel on the prisoners swap deal.
Israel’s refusal to release Palestinian prisoners with heavy sentences has stopped the negotiations with Hamas.
Hamas demands the release of 1,500 Palestinians, including 450 facing life imprisonment and political leaders.
The Palestinian resistance took Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit as prisoner in 2006. Later, Israel launched several attacks on Gaza, killing thousands of Palestinians.
In the 2009 Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, 1,400 Palestinians were killed.
