SUDAN: SEVEN UNAMID POLICE PERSONNEL INJURED IN ATTACK

AL-FASHER (SUDAN), Feb 18 (NNN-SUNA) — Seven of the Pakistani Police forces working among the UNAMID peace-keeping forces were wounded Tuesday afternoon in an ambush outside Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State.

In a press release it issued Wednesday at its headquarters in Al-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, the UNAMID said that three of the seven personnel were seriously injured.

The release said that a UNAMID convoy, composed of five vehicles, was carrying a number of police forces was subjected to intensive fire opened on them by unknown armed persons at Sakali area near to Al-Shareef camp, 17 kilometers from southern Nyala.

The UNAMID explained that its police patrol was returning to its center after a mission for building confidence between local people at the area surrounding to the displaced camp when a group of militants armed with rifles and AK guns suddenly opened fire on them, injuring the seven Pakistani policemen.

The release indicated that six of seven wounded UNAMID personnel were taken to Nyala hospital for treatment, while the seventh, who was critically injured, was flown to Khartoum.

The press release said that the special representative of the UN and the African Union and head of the UNAMID, Ibrahim Gambari, has visited the injured policemen at Nyala hospital, strongly denounced the attack and expressed his regret over the ugly incident.

The release quoted Prof. Gambari as saying that this attack was regarded as a war crime, and that the persons who committed this heinous aggression shall be brought before justice.

Gambari affirmed the determination of the UNAMID mission to continue its role for realizing peace in Darfur. — NNN-SUNA
