PARENTS of children under Smarter Society for the Management of Autism Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources (Smarter) to be more responsible, committed, proactive and supportive in order to keep Smarter afloat.

Smarter newly-elected president Malai Hj Abdullah Malai Hj Othman during the society’s annual general meeting yesterday spoke about problems Smarter faces such as trying to come up with money to finance their new building. In relation to this, he urged parents of children registered with Smarter to pay their membership fees.

“It has been a difficult task to get the new building. So we are going to end the memberships of parents who haven’t paid,” he said.

He added: “This (Smarter) isn’t for free. I have to employ and pay people too.”

Reminding the parents that Smarter only exists through their support, he urged parents make their commitment to Smarter as a top priority.

“We have 24 hours in a day, so make time. Smarter should be on top, if not second on the list of your priorities,” he said.

He added:”Smarter is crumbling and I want it to survive for a long time. You are also going to be members for a long time.”

He also told parents who were seriously want to help their children and don’t know where to start to approach him.

Malai Hj Abdullahwho has been selected to serve for another two years said he would accept the position under certain conditions.”If situations remain unchanged and there are still no improvements in activities, I will step down in three months,” he said.

The Smarter president also disclosed that in the spirit of Brunei’s 26th National Day, the society will be selling every item in their shop for a sum of one dollar.

Among issues discussed at the meeting included the society’s future activities, agendas and reviewed the annual budget aside from electing new committee members. (SHR1)
