THE Arabic language is a language of the Quran and is the primary mode of instruction at the Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA). It is also one of the languages used for communication internationally in several nations as well as within the United Nations.
Arabic is also a religious, language that is frequently heard and read daily in prayers in Islamic nations.
Based on its high level of importance, UNISSA, through its language and knowledge centre has taken the initiative to hold an Arabic language month annually. This began in 2008/2009. This year, the Arabic language month was held between January 23 and February 20.
Such activities, it is hoped, will widen and promote the use of the Arabic language among the students and lecturers, and therefore enhance the students’ skills in understanding as well as allowing them a platform for communication with other societies outside Brunei, which utilise the language.
It also fosters closer ties among the students, lecturers and university staff. Among the targeted objectives are the widening of the language’s use in a practical manner within the classroom environment, enriching the students’ vocabulary making it possible for them to achieve a high level of success while pursuing their studies at UNISSA.
UNISSA’s Dr Hj Serbini bin Hj Matahir was present as the chief guest for the official ending of the Arabic language month.
