Workshop held to meet UNESCO objectives

A four-day workshop on Brunei Darussalam Education for All (EFA) assessment report held at Katok Sixth Form Centre began yesterday and will end on February 26. The opening ceremony was attended by Dr Haji Kassim bin Haji Mohd Daud, Director of Planning, Research and Development, Ministry of Education as the chief guest.

The event started with the recital of surah al-fatihah followed by welcoming remarks by the Chief Editor of Brunei Darussalam EFA assessment report, Awang Othman bin Hj Simbran, Senior Special Duties Officer, Secretariat Of Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council, Ministry of Education.

The workshop was facilitated by Ms Leotes Lugo Helin, Assistant Programme Officer, UNESCO Institute for Statistics Regional Office, UIS-AIMS Unit, UNESCO Bangkok and Ms Malisa Santigul, Information Assistant, UNESCO Bangkok.

The report will be the first EFA Assessment report for the country which will touch on issues to find out whether the country’s education system corresponds with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) EFA’s objectives.

UNESCO has set six EFA goals as early childhood care and education, universal basic education, life skills and life-long learning, literacy, gender and quality.

EFA is a global commitment to provide quality basic education for all children, youths and adults. By 2015, some of the aspects that needed to be achieved include the improvement of all aspects of quality in education and to ensure excellence.
