CARACAS, Feb 24 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – The American Indigenous Parliament in Venezuela has called on the government to defend the environment and announced its backing to the Peoples’ World Conference on Climate Change promoted by Bolivian President Evo Morales.
During a press conference held in this capital, the president of the lawmakers group Venezuelan Jose Poyo held capitalism accountable for the problems affecting nature and human development.
“We must defend the native land from capitalism and neoliberalism which have endangered life in the planet”, he told Prensa Latina.
He said problems like global warming and drought plaguing Venezuela today were forwarned by wise indigenous leaders
“Those are old phenomena visualised by our shamans, who alerted the dangers posed by human behaviour contrary to the preservation of natural resources and life itself on earth”, he said.
Poyo reiterated the support of the American Indian Parliament to the Peoples’ World Conference on Climate Change, a forum from April 19 to 22 in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
“We will support President Morales call to take steps aimed at stopping environmental deterioration”, he said. The meeting in Cochabamba will generate stronger responses to the environmental problem created by capitalism, he added.
He also called for public mobilisation to demand effective measures against climate change and its consequences. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
