CARACAS, Feb 24 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – The ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela – PSUV (Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela) will organise events next weekend to commemorate El Caracazo, a popular rebellion that broke out Feb 27 and 28 of 1989 demanding social justice.
Bolivar squares throughout the country will be the stage to recall protests against neo-liberal policies of the president at that time, Carlos Andres Perez, PSUV national board member Jacqueline Farias said.
Socialist youths will use the two days to paint murals and promote cultural activities, she said.
Farias further added that more details will be given by the party’s Mobilisation and Events Commission.
An unknown number of Venezuelans lost their lives through repression unleashed 21 years ago by the military and police.
On another issue, the PSUV informed that it will approved a schedule to select its candidates for the legislative elections of Sept 26.
Jorge Rodriguez, mayor of Caracas’ municipality of Libertador said that more than seven million socialist militants will have the opportunity to participate in the process.
No opposition party promotes a process so democratic and transparent because they privately select their candidates and fight among themselves, Rodriguez said. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
