Winners of 5th National Skills Competition feted

Fourteen winners of the 5th National Skills Competition 2010 have earned a spot to represent Brunei Darussalam in the upcoming Asean Skills competition which will be held in November in Thailand.

The winners came from 14 skills contested from February 2 to 11, 2010. Contestants mostly came from five technical institutions namely Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College (MTSSR), Mechanic Training Centre (PLM), Sultan Bolkiah Vocational School (SVSB), Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School (SVNR), Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College (MKJB), as well as private sectors.

In the automobile technology skill area, the winners were Mohammad Arif bin Hj Duraman who took the gold (PLM), Muhammad Zulfahri bin Hj Rosli silver (PLM) and Abdul Akhimah bin Md Salleh Haini bronze (SVSB). For the bricklaying skill area, Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School took all the podium places with Mohammad Mustaqieem bin Moksin grabbing the gold, Mohamad Asmawi bin Hj Awang Muslim silver and Siti Hawa bin Tuah bronze.

Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School again reigned supreme in the cabinet making skill area where all the top three spots went to the school. Muhammad Khairul Asymawi bin Nawi snatched the gold followed by Muhammad Nazri bin Moraini @ Muhamad Khairol Nazri taking the silver and Mohammad Al-Nazirul Mubin bin Rosle the bronze.

In the cooking skill area, Mohammad Nur Asyraf bin Noraini/Bahrin took the gold medal followed by Dahiyah binti Hj Mohd Yunus of MTSSR and Syukriah binti Hj Abdul Kadir Jailani also from MTSSR.

Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College took a clean sweep in the electrical installation skill area. Magchlas Anak Manggau came up top with the gold medal followed by Wong Teck Wei who grabbed silver and Muhammad Hafiz bin Kepli took the bronze.

Meanwhile, in the IT software applications, Lim Tze Yee of MTSSR took the gold medal followed by two students of MKJB – Hazizul bin Hasnan who took silver and Muhammad Raimi bin Ramli the bronze.

In the fashion technology skill area, Noridah binti Mahmud from Leenice School was crowned the winner followed by Noralipah binti Mohd Shahlan of SVSB and Jessica Anak Rantai also from SVSB. The winners of the Mechanical Engineering Cad skill area are Nazmi bin Hj Ahmad (ITB) followed by Norzawanah binti Md Noor (ITB) and Muhammad Shafi’i bin Hj Mohammad Shah of MTSSR.

In plumbing skill area, the winners were Syarip bin Mail who took the gold medal for Youth Development Centre followed by his compatriot Muhammad Roshidi bin Roslan who took silver and Muhammad Shaiful bin Mohd Salleh of SVNR the bronze

The winners for refrigeration skill area were Hj Mohammad Sukoran bin Hj Ismail of MKJB in first place followed by Mohammad Fahuddin bin Mohd Dali (SVSB) and Haziq Fadhil bin Ibrahim (MKJB) in second and third respectively.

The winners of the restaurant service were Aliza binti Hj Moksin of MTSSR in first place followed by Awang Abdul Azim bin Awang Hj Maidin and Azreena Lynn binti Awang, both from the Empire Hotel and Country Club. In Web Design, the winners were Norliyana binti Hj Jailani who took the top spot from MTSSR, followed by Shathirah binti Dr Hj Serbini of MTSSR and Siti Nurhafizah binti Subli of MKJB.

The welding skill area winners were Juni Anak Inggang of SVSB who took the gold medal, Mohammad Rahmat bin Abdullah of SVSB who grabbed the silver medal and Muhammad Hanis Syazwan bin Ramly the bronze medal from Youth Development Centre.

The winners for the hairdressing skill area came from Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School and they were Nur Al-Mas Azyan binti Kamis in first place followed by Nurul Norhazwani binti Saini in second place and Siti Noraza binti Asli in third place.

Two of the winners, Mohammad Nur Asyraf bin Noraini/Bahrin, the winner of cooking skill area and Aliza binti Hj Moksin both from MTSSR won the restaurant services skill area were shocked and excited to win their respective categories.

Both winners said, “We were surprised to hear our names announced as winners and at the same time we are excited to be able to represent Brunei in the next Asean Skills competition.”

Mohammad Nur Asyraf who used to work as an apprentice in RBC said, “Working in RBC has also helped me to improve my culinary skills. And this is one of the many contributing factors including the guidance from lecturers in helping me to win the gold medal.”

This is the fifth year the Department of Technical Education has organised such an event and some 14 trade areas were competed.

The winner who meets the benchmark will represent the country in the 8th Asean Skills Competition that will be held in Impact Muangthons Thani, Nonthaburi, Thailand from November 14-24, 2010, where a total of 21 trade areas will be competed.

The guest of honour who presented the prizes was Dr Haji Junaidi bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Deputy Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Education.
