Workshop on decision-making at iCentre

Amie PDH Ishak Feb 26th, 2010 .

As part of the iCentre’s initiative for its Think Big Entrepreneurship Workshop programme, a workshop on decision-making was held yesterday at the iCentre’s auditorium in Anggerek Desa.

The programme organised by iCentre was conducted by guest speaker Dr Er Jwee Ping from Singapore, who spoke on how decision-making comes in different forms. During the workshop, Dr Er listed out the common heuristics of an individual that can also influence their decision-making.

Every individual takes responsibilities for their own actions; their decisions will reflect the outcomes with some uncertainties. Usually, an individual would react and make their decisions based on logic or ‘rule of thumb’ – known as heuristics.

Dr Er also involved the course participants in several exercises and discussions on certain issues during the workshop.

“I want the audience to understand not just by listening to me, but to be fully aware that this is what they do in their daily lives. I am just helping them to see it in a different aspect that can make their decisions in a better way,” stated Dr Er.

Dr Er is currently Programme Director of the Asian Risk Management Institute, which is an adjunct faculty with the NUS Business School and Singapore Management University.

He has many years of consulting experiences and managed numerous projects that include risk operational system, processing and design-improvement projects. Participants of the workshop included a majority of students and lecturers, incubatees as well as private companies.

The participants felt that despite the difference in backgrounds, it had educated them on how to think and react differently to different situations, and with the guidelines that Dr Er has provided it will improve on their decision-making.

The workshop’s purpose is to assist the participants on decision-making as additional knowledge that can be applied to their own personal or company’s benefits. The iCentre holds workshops at least once a month, which is open to the general public, as well as the incubatees.

The topic of each workshop varied from one another, and touched on subjects relating to business in IT. Speakers also vary for each workshop, with both foreign and local facilitators.
