WASHINGTON, Feb 27 (NNN-APP) — The United States described Pakistan?s decisive actions against militants as encouraging, saying recent developments on both sides of the Durand Line indicate that Washington?s strategy toward the region is showing results.
At Congressional hearings and briefings at State and Defense Departments, senior Obama Administration officials commended Islamabad?s series of actions against Taliban militants over the last year.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told lawmakers on the Capitol Hill that Pakistan?s ?democratically elected government as well as the military and intelligence services,? have shown significant commitment to the ongoing fight against militancy.
?I think that this last year has demonstrated significant changes in approach and commitment from the Pakistani government,? she told the House Foreign Affairs Committee in reference to actions in its northwestern areas and the federally administered tribal areas.
Clinton noted that the Pakistani role in arrests of a string of leading Afghan Taliban figures is ?very strong evidence of that (resolve).?
At the State Department, Assistant Secretary P J Crowley, commenting on recent success against militants in the region, said ?this is expressly the kind of decisive action that we sought in our strategy from the outset, and we have that has been the basis upon which we have worked with Afghanistan, worked with Pakistan.?
?And I think you are showing the results of the strategy in that clearly, we are making significant gains here. No one?s declaring victory. This still is an adversary of the United States, Afghanistan, and Pakistan that adapts as we do as well,? the spokesman told reporters.
?But as to what conclusions those who are associated with political violence will draw from this, that is expressly why we have included in our strategy the concept of reintegrating those who are currently engaged in the fight, who would be willing to lay down their arms, disassociate themselves from al-Qaida and accept the Afghan constitution or the rule of law in Pakistan,? he continued.
?As to what happens on the reconciliation front, we are not too far down that road at this point. But these will ultimately be decisions made by the Afghan leadership on their side, the Pakistani leadership on their side.
?But certainly, I think we are encouraged by the broad trends that show the results of Pakistan?s decisive action. I think we are seeing in Marja the early favorable early returns in terms of the military action there.
We are now moving ahead with being able to bring more civilians into that region and demonstrate to the Afghan people that there are clear benefits to them in the immediate term and the long run,? Crowley stated.
At the Pentagon, Press Secretary Geoff Morrell declined to comment specifically on any specific operation or capture but praised Islamabad?s key anti-militancy efforts.
?…the commitment that the Pakistani government, the military, its intelligence forces have demonstrated over the past several months to combating this threat within their midst is commendable.
?We laud them for it. We are here to help them in any which way they are comfortable as they continue to pursue this enemy that?s a threat not just to us and to our efforts in Afghanistan, but obviously to
the Pakistani people as well.? Morrell remarked. — NNN-APP
