SANTO DOMINGO, March 1 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – Dominican President Leonel Fernandez assured that Haiti is worthy of a better future and ratified a world summit to update commitments of financial aid to the earthquake devastated island to be held here in June.
He also expressed solidarity with Chile after the massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the country Sat Feb 27 when he presented a report on his performance last year.
In a long speech lasting about two hours before Parliament, Fernandez reviewed the state of the economy last year which he termed as dismal as a result of the world economic and financial crisis unleashed by what he described as “a casino capitalist economy.”
Fernandez said that deregulation of U.S markets since the 80s and the frenzied speculation fed the bubble that burst last year with devastating effects for world economies.
However, he assured that overall the crisis did not have catastrophic consequences for his country, whose economic growth was 3.5 percent similar to that of Bolivia.
The president promised an increase in housing construction for persons of low and medium incomes, the configuration of a plan of national development and to improve the feeble school infrastructure which he recognised as deficient.
One of the plans he announced was the substitution of earth floors for cement ones and the creation of new classrooms.
Other topics covered by the president were the increasing influence of drug trafficking and the increasing street insecurity, the high criminal rate and the corruption in the armed forces and the police. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
