KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Good governance is needed to sustain Malaysia’s water industry on a long-term basis, says Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Peter Chin.
The challenges in the water industry can be tackled by formulating and implementing sustainable solutions to better manage the entire water cycle, he added Tuesday in a speech read out by Water Supply Director-General Dr Hasnul Mohamad Salleh at the 1st International Water Association (IWA) Malaysia Young Water Professionals Conference here.
“Despite the many problems facing the water industry, none can be as pervading in determining the success or failure of water management in a country than good governance,” Chin said. “We need to improve and facilitate the governance of water resources and the water industry so that all Malaysians have access to the water services they need.”
Chin said the roles and responsibilities of the various institutions would need to be clearly defined and should have complete coverage, from catchment areas to the consumer.
The solutions should focus on how best to protect water at its source, treat it to the highest standards, deliver it to homes and businesses and then collect and treat the wastewater before reintroducing it safely back into the environment, he said.
“With the advances in technology, we can also seek methods of sourcing ‘new water’ through reuse, aquifer storage and recovery or desalination of water,” he added.
