THE Ministry of Development expects over 10,000 of 17,500 homes to be completed by 2012, in line with Brunei’s Vision 2035 to meet the housing demand.

In a statement released at a contract signing ceremony for the National Housing Scheme and Landless Indigenous Citizens Housing Scheme (STKRJ), the Ministry of Development announced that more housing projects are in place.

“Up until this point, a number of housing contracts have been carried out with approximately 3,400 units of homes and land lots nationwide,” read the statement.

“Several other contracts are currently in the tendering process which will yield a further 4,600 units of houses and land lots,” the statement added.

The statement also outlined that several other projects will be tendered in excess of 2,000 homes and lots in 2010, in order to achieve 10,000 homes by 2012.

Under the National Housing Scheme and STKRJ, 6,850 homes can be accommodated in Kg Tanah Jambu, Meragang of the Brunei-Muara district and Kg Lumut and Sg Liang in Belait.

It is estimated that about 4,000 homes will fill the allocated 915 hectares under the National Housing Scheme in Kg Meragang and Kg Tanah Jambu. The Kg Tanah Jambu STKRJ land is adequate for a further 850 units. The 282 hectares of development in Belait is forecasted to cater for 2,000 homes.

Under the Vision 2035, the planned development of 17,500 homes and land lots are divided between the Ministry of Development and the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB).

The Ministry of Development, through the Housing Development Department and Public Works Department, is responsible for 10,000 homes, while the rest falls under BEDB. The budget allocated for housing development in the five-year development plan from 2007-2012 is $1.5 billion.
