SANTIAGO, March 10 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – An international group of experts has noticed that the magnitude of the earthquake that hit Chile on Feb 27 pushed several Chilean cities as well as in Argentina and Brazil out of place.
The cities of Concepcion and Santiago moved about 10.7 inches to the southeast and Buenos Aires about 1 inch to the west, concluded experts from the universities of Ohio, Memphis and Hawaii states, the Institute of Technology in California, the University in Concepcion and the Center for Scientific Studies in Chile.
Other cities as Valparaiso in Chile and Mendoza in Argentina as well as the remote Fortaleza in Brazil, also changed their positions, scientists said after analysing and comparing some GPS measurements located in the region, before and after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake.
Analysing the information we prove the displacement occurred during the quake, Mike Bevis, professor on Earth Sciences at Ohio State University, stated.
This is the fifth most powerful earthquake that has shaken the planet, experts said. –NNN-PRENSA LATINA
