THE case of four police officers who pleaded not guilty to causing death and grievous hurt of Abdul Rahim Abdullah @ Tan Tong Hock will be heard today at the High Court.
The case was heard yesterday, however, and was adjourned pending an application made by the prosecution on the discussion of statement of agreed facts.
The defendants are Inspector Hj Azwan Dato Paduka Seri Hj Abdul Rahman, L/Cpl 3567 Sofian Jumat, PC 4482 Andrew Anak Adin and PC 4488 Pg Asmanuddin Pg Hj Md Said.
All defendants were charged with causing the death of the 45-year-old Muslim convert sometime between 8.08pm and 9.05pm on January 22 last year at the CID room in Sengkurong Police Station. The charge carries an imprisonment term, which may extend to 15 years or with fine or both if found guilty.
The second charge to which they also pleaded not guilty states that they voluntarily caused grievous hurt in trying to extort a confession from Abdul Rahim, which carries the maximum penalty of 10 years’ jail and whipping if found guilty.
Meanwhile, PC 4488 Pg Asmanuddin, who is charged alternatively to voluntarily causing hurt to Abdul Rahim by slapping him on the face, is facing an imprisonment term which may extend to three years and a fine.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Hj Nabil Daraina bin PUKDPSS Ustaz Hj Awang Badaruddin and DPP Christopher Ng appeared for the public prosecutor.
The four defendants are represented by Counsel Mr Yusof Halim, assisted by Mr Roy Prabhakaran.
