And the worst hit forest area is near the Badas pipeline and- yesterday a small fire was reported in the area. However, Mohd Taha assured that the situation is currently under control.
He said firefighters were able to contain the blaze from spreading rapidly but unable to completely put out the smoke as the area that was gutted was mainly peat swamp forest. It would take several weeks for firefighters to put out the smoke.
He added that firefighters are continuing their efforts to put out the blaze and smoke completely by carrying out operations from morning till 7pm every day.
Furthermore, the firefighters are also boosting efforts by conducting 24-hour patrols at identified areas prone to forest fires and have also deputed firewatchers.
Mohd Taha advised drivers to reduce speed and switch on their vehicles’ headlights if the smog reduces the visibility of the road ahead.
He further advised motorists and others to immediately contact the fire emergency line (995) if they spot any minor forest fire, as any delays in relaying the message could result in the blaze spreading rapidly and extensively.
