ROSEAU, DOMINICA, March 12 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – In a bid to come up with measures to counteract water shortage in the Caribbean the effects of drought on people and the region is currently being discussed by members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) here.
Drought and support to the Haitian people after the devastating earthquake in Jan are among the main issues discussed in the 21st CARICOM Inter-Session Meeting which began in Dominica’s capital today.
Dominica’s Prime Minister and current CARICOM President Roosevelt Skerrit said the opening of the meeting that Haiti’s situation and drought are the crucial issues to be discussed in the meeting here without excluding the analysis of regional security, crime rate, the world economic crisis and the situation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
In a two-day meeting participants will also look into the damages caused by drought, the mishandling of the ecosystem, unsustainable agriculture and the effects of the El Niño climatic phenomenum, which is causing a rise in temperature on South American waters.
CARICOM is looking for a broad coordinated and participatory process that involves the international community in helping to mitigate the drought’s effects that threaten most of the flora and fauna species and increase deforestation and environmental pollution.
Deterioration in the hydrographic basin causes damages to people’s living conditions, threatening their possibilities for survival and provoking desertification.
According to the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology, drought conditions and preponderant winds during the current season increases the risk of wild fires in southern parts of the region.
