International Game Fishing Tournament

Local fishing enthusiasts will have a chance to participate in an international fishing competition at the open sea by joining the Dream Charter’s yacht which will set sail for the International Game Fishing Tournament from April 27 to May 2 from Labuan.
The five-day fishing competition will kick start from Labuan and sail all the way to Pulau Layang Layang, an island known for its beautiful coral reef and scenery, located some 180 miles off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. The tournament will come to an end at Kuraman Island.

Aideen Henry of Dream Charter said: “Last year some 270 participants around the region took part in the tournament in the team or individual categories.”

“The grand prize for the team event is RM$25,000 and trophy with second place grabbing RM$10,000 and third place will go home with RM$8,000 while for the individual honour, it will depend on the fish that are being caught.

“The individual prizes include Heaviest Coral Trout, Heaviest Yellowfin Tuna, Heaviest Dogtooth Tuna, Heaviest Trevally, Heaviest Giant Grouper, Heaviest Escolar, Heaviest Amberjack. All the fish caught must be thrown back to the sea to preserve the marine system,” she said.

She also highlighted that participants will have to bring their personal fishing equipments and baits.

On security, Aideen revealed that the Malaysian coastguards will be escorting the participating boats.

To enter each person has to pay RM$400 and B$100 for each day on board Dream Charter’s yacht of Petima.

The closing date for entries is April 12 and currently there are only six seats left on the Dream Charter yacht.

When asked about the business of sailing in Brunei, she said: “Business is good. From January 2009, there are an increasing number of people joining the trip especially the sunset cruise and day sailing.”
