Litterbugs slapped with fines

TWO people were recently caught red-handed for scattering rubbish in public by Enforcement officers of the Belait District Office.

During the ‘Ops Didik 05′ operation, which involved two days of surveillance, officers caught the duo committed an offence under Chapter 30, Section 12 of the Minor Offences Act.

One of them was slapped with a $100 fine for disposing storage boxes and other unsued items at a public area. The other offender, meanwhile, was hit with a stiffer fine of $300 for throwing food scraps at an open field.

According to officers, the duo claimed they threw the food scraps to “feed animals in the thicket”.
In the Brunei-Muara District, a convenience shop and two construction companies were slapped with compound fines for illegal dumping, which is an offence under the Minor Offences Act.

According to the Law Enforcement Unit of the BSB Municipal Board, a construction company in Jalan Tutong was slapped with a $500 fine. The convenience shop and other construction company in Gadong were, meanwhile, both slapped with a $200 compound fine.

If the compound fines are not settles, the matter will be forwarded to court, where first-time offenders will, upon conviction, be slapped with a $1,000 fine. Repeat offenders may be fined $3,000 and sentenced to a maximum of three months’ iail.
