Brunei sets standard for offshore training

Borneo Bulletin Writer Mar 13th, 2010 .

THIS week, Megamas celebrated 10 years from the initial Tropical BOSIET OPITO Course they conducted there. It was the first ever TBOSIET held in the world, and Megamas was proud that this was held in Brunei.

In the oil and gas industry, safety is the number one priority. OPITO (Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation) offers competency-based common industry standards to help employers build a safe workforce.
In March 2000, Megamas designed and implemented the Tropical BOSIET OPITO Course for offshore workers in warm waters. It was endorsed by OPITO as a fitfor-purpose standard offering training of international standards different to the UK’s cold-water one.

It has been adopted today in 15 countries worldwide, and literally hundreds of thousands of participants have been trained – from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, India, Qatar, to USA
and the Gulf of Mexico.

It has made a substantial impact in providing safe training for offshore workers in the oil-gas industry.
In the last 10 years, all participants at Megamas for TBOSIET/TFOET offshore training have received the same standards of competency training as required by the OPITO international standard. OPITO training is fully quality-assured with traceable assessment records of individual performances.

The Group Chief Executive of OPITO, David Doig, remarked that “the contribution made by Megamas in safety has been immense in the last 10 years, and has unquestionably saved the lives of offshore workers”.
He also commented that the burning passions of Megamas to do things the right way heavily influenced his work, and has the drive to take OPITO forward into the international marketplace.
