Labour Department inspects Tutong businesses

Borneo Bulletin Writer Mar 13th, 2010 .

SIX officers of the Labour Enforcement Division led by Acting Senior Labour Supervisor from Labour Enforcement Division conducted ‘Operasi Jejak 2010′ at the premises of sale booth in Tutong District Business Complex and another shopping complex in the district on March 11. The aim was to inspect foreign workers who are running businesses and weed out violation of foreign worker licence issued by the Labour Department besides taking into account issues related to salary and workers’ welfare, according to a press release.

The operation focused on sale booths in the ‘shopping complex and eight places were inspected. The department found two offences under Labour Law 2009, which were domestic helper working as salesperson and another salesperson illegitimately hired by a different employer. Placement and jobs held by those workers were not in line with Labour Licence Approval and employment contract and these workers should be working and be placed at the approved address under Taking and Hiring Foreign Workers Licence, Labour Department. Further investigation will be conducted on these workers and their employers and further action will be taken, including revoking their licence if found guilty.

In view of this, the Labour Department is reminding the general public or employers to not abuse their given licence. For taking and hiring foreign workers without written permit from the department, it is an offence under Section 112 (1) ’2009 Employment Law’. If found guilty, a fine of not less than $6,000 and not more than $10,000 or jail not less than six months and not more than three years or both await.

For any information relating to 2009 Employment Law and labour issues, the Labour Department can be contacted at its hotline 2381848.
