AMMAN, March 14 (NNN-KUNA) — The sixth session of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Parliamentary Assembly started here on Saturday, with talks on the Middle East peace process, climate change, energy and the possibility of turning economic partnership between member states into a joint fund.
President of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Parliamentary Assembly Abulhadi Al Majaly said at the opening of the session that nations in the region aspiring for development could do so as a result of the political reality they live in light of the obstructed peace process and continuing occupation.
He called for a peaceful solution to the Palestinian issue according to international laws and UN resolutions.
Al Majaly also noted the right of the Palestinians to establish their own state on lands occupied back in 1967, alongside Israel.
A proposal to transform Euro-Mediterranean Partnership into a Euro-Mediterranean Bank was also mentioned by Al Majaly, who suggested it would be a means to fund small to mid-sized projects in member nations aimed at combating poverty and unemployment.
For her part, Commissioner-General for Arab Civil Society of the Arab League, Nancy Bakir said in a speech on behalf of the secretary general, that the path of dialogue with Israel under the current circumstances was ineffective.
This she said is due to the Israeli practices against Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa Mosque and Al-Khalil (Hebron), as well its settlement construction in the West Bank which are a challenge to the Arab World and the international community.
She also reiterated Arab commitment to the establishment of Palestinian statehood, on the borders of 1967, with Jerusalem as a capital, and that this hope would remain even if unachieved in 100 years.
The Arab Peace Initiative Committee will give Israel one last opportunity to hold indirect talks on the condition these talks remain open, with a deadline of four months and the siege on Gaza be lifted, as well as the United States conceding its position over this siege, she noted. ? NNN-KUNA
