The Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Jawatan Luar Pekerma Raja Dato Seri Utama Dr Ustaz Haji Awang Mohd Zain bin Haji Serudin, yesterday offered clarification in regards to the financial assistance provided by the government for qualified government servants wishing to embark on the haj pilgrimage.
A query on whether the financial aid given is sufficient was brought forward by YB Orang Kaya Maha Bijaya Awang Haji Othman bin Uking during the Sixth Legco.
In response, the minister stated that a return ticket for adults set by the Ministry of Communication in 2009 was valued at $2,700 – whilst transportation from the Medinah Airport to the hotel, from Mecca to Medinah, from Mecca to Masyahir (Arafah), Mina and Mecca and from Mecca to Jeddah amounted to $139, totalling up to $2,839 – leaving a surplus of $661 when subtracted from the given $3,500.
“The haj fare is reviewed by a relevant committee every year,” the minister explained to emphasise that the financial assistance provided is sufficient.
