The delayed Lubok Nihing, Ulu Tutong roadwork project, was one of a few issues brought up by Yang Berhormat Orang Kaya Maha Bijaya Awang Haji Othman bin Uking, during the Sixth Legislative Council meeting that took place yesterday – in which he stated that the project had originally been scheduled for completion by the end of 2008.
The Minister of Development, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakir, explained that this particular project involves the development of a 22-kilometre stretch of road from the Jalan Kampong Belaban junction heading towards Namoknik.
“The roadwork is actually part of the Ampangan Ulu Tutong development project that was scheduled to be completed by early 2009,” said the minister.
The delay, he explained – revolved around unexpected problems related to the construction company that had been awarded the contract. The company had delivered unsatisfactory results.
“The project has now been tendered and the contract is continued as of February 2010. The project is expected to be completed by 2013,” the minister added.
Meanwhile, YB Orang Kaya Maha Bijaya Awang Haji Othman lauded the efforts made by the Ministry of Development for the improvements made on the Tutong-Muara highway and queried whether the same treatment will be given to rural roads of which the minister replied, “attention will also be given to these roads”.
According to the minister, a total of $120 million has been set aside for improving rural roads, focusing mainly on improving the safety and convenience for road users. “The road works will include, among others, replacing the current road to asphalt and widening the roads wherever necessary,” he concluded.
