EUROPE CAN HELP ADVANCE MIDEAST PEACEMAKING – JORDANIAN KING

AMMAN, March 15 (NNN-PETRA) — King Abdullah II said that Europe has a pivotal role to muster support for efforts to remove obstacles blocking progress to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict according to the two-state solution and credible terms of reference, namely the Arab peace initiative.

King Abdullah also warned in a meeting with European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek here Sunday that continued settlement construction and other unilateral Israeli moves to change the identity of Jerusalem and threaten holy shrines in the city would undermine peace efforts and exacerbate tension and instability in the region.

Buzek is currently on a visit to Jordan to take part in a meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA) which began here Saturday.

During the meeting with the King, attended by Senate President Taher Al Masri, EMPA Chairman Senator Abdul Hadi Majali and the King’s advisers, King Abdullah hailed the European Parliament’s support for efforts to make headway in the Middle East peace efforts.

He said progress should be made in the peace process within a comprehensive regional context in order to end the conflict and bring security and stability to the people of the region.

The King was briefed on topics tackled by the EMPA, foremost of which was the Middle East peace efforts, and expressed hope that such gatherings would be a boost to the quest for peace.

The discussion also tackled Jordanian-European ties and the king stressed that Jordan was keen on building close relations with the European Parliament to foster the Euro-Med partnership.
