In conjunction with the World Glaucoma Day 2010, the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Hospital in Tutong conducted free glaucoma check-ups for the public at the hospital’s lobby area.
Residents in the district who visited the hospital’s exhibition at its lobby also learnt more about glaucoma that they never knew of before.
They also got an opportunity to meet eye specialists for more information on the problem. The nurses and the hospital’s other staff members also distributed brochures to the public, and this way it is possible for them to find out if they suffer from glaucoma. One of the specialists said that people who have diabetes or high blood pressure, or have taken any steroid medicines for a long period of time, are among the high-risk.
Glaucoma cannot be cured completely, but it can be controlled by having a check-up at the eye clinics that are available throughout the country and through continuous cures to prevent blindness. He also advised the public not to worry, as the Ministry of Health has specialists to deal with such problems.
Some of them were diagnosed to have the disease, and they were advised by the hospital to make an appointment for further check-ups. It was an effort by the ministry to provide knowledge to the public on the glaucoma problem and the risks to people affected by it. According to WHO, 67 million people in the world faced the risk, and 4.5 million of them have become blind. Glaucoma is the main cause of blindness that cannot be cured. Early check-ups to detect the problem are more important to lower the risks of getting blind.
