MINISTRY of Health officials together with doctors from around the nation celebrated World Kidney Day early yesterday morning with a walkathon and speeches aimed at getting the public to realise that diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure.
Themed “Protecting the Kidneys from Diabetes”, the event’s primary objective, according to officials, was to stress to the public the dangers of kidney failure, the preventive measures that can be taken and early detection treatment.
According to official figures, 60 to 70 per cent of patients in Brunei who go for a dialysis suffer from “chronic diabetes”. The issue, officials say, is not restricted to Brunei alone as it reflects the global concern to take preventive measures in order to control diabetes.
Officiating yesterday’s walkathon was the Minister of Health, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman, who highlighted the fact that once the diabetes can be controlled, kidney problems will drastically diminish and may even be prevented altogether. 150 people took part in the event.
