Elderly Convert To Get New Home

The Islamic Dakwah Centre has come to the rescue of 70-year-old convert Muhammad Qarar bin Abd Azim Kelambu, lending him a hand in securing a roof over his head.

The project – which will see the constructing of a three-bedroom modular home on the recipient’s land within the remote area of Kampong Sungai Petai in Labi – was initiated with a foundation laying ceremony yesterday by Permanent

Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Awg Haji Mohd Mandi bin Pehin Orang Kaya DiGadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awg Abdul Rahman.

The building of homes for underprivileged converts in Brunei is a project that is headed by the Islamic Dakwah Centre and funded by Baitul Mal, distribution of zakat.

According to a religious officer, under the project, 14 homes have been constructed in the Belait District since 1997.

This is the first time a modular type home is being built, carrying price tag of $43,000- excluding infrastructure and installation of fixtures and fittings.

Although retired for some time, Muhammad Qarar is still liying at the Mumong Barrack provided by the Public Works Department, given he s no financial means to build a home on his two-acre land in Labi. Also staying with him are six children and grandchildren, plus his 68-year-old wife Siti Erina binti Abdul Rahirn.

Thankful for the help, Muhammad Qarar expressed his gratitude to the Islamic Dakwah Centre for selecting him as one of the recipients of a_ me, adding that he could only afford to build a hut at his Labi land for the storage farming equipment and other items.

The construction of the home began yesterday and is expected to be completed within three months.

Following the foundation laying ceremony, the Permanent Secretary in his working visit to Mukim Labi proceeded to visit the Mendaram Besar longhouse, which accommodates 11 Iban families. The visiting group was welcomed by Longhouse Leader Barandi Anak Jamou.
