Temburong Viewers To Get Better TV Reception

Siti Hajar Mar 16th, 2010 .

Residents in the Temburong District will soon receive better TV signals from Radio Television Brunei, according to the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awg Hj Mohammad bin Hj Daud, thanks to the government’s efforts in further developing the district.

The Temburong District Representative to the Legislative Council, YB Awg Hj Sulaiman bin Hj Ahad, earlier brought up the issue of poor TV reception in the district at the Legislative Council meeting yesterday.

“The residents in Temburong have a right to know what is going on in the country,” he said, “considering that RTB is the nation’s local broadcast station responsible for airing local news.”

In response, the Minister of Energy under the Prime Minister’s Office stated that the district will be installed with a “transforcer” that is to be stationed in Batu Apoi.

“With the transforcer, the areas concerned (mostly rural areas) will receive better reception,” the minister said. RTB is currently making a proposal for a permanent station in Temburong, he said, adding that a site has been chosen and that the construction of the permanent station will commence once the site is ready.

Meanwhile, YB Awg Hj Mohd Shafiee, the Belait District Representative, brought up the issue of the lack of skilled manpower to operate the computerised RTB station based in Kuala Belait. He proposed the recruitment of more staff “to generate inspiration” through the production of more programmes, “which can only happen with properly trained staff’.

He also touched upon the issue of employees working for RTB who are still receiving “vouchers” and suggested that these individuals, comprising 70 per cent of RTB staff in the Belait District, to be offered alternative schemes such as monthly pay.

In response to this, the minister said that the proposals and issues will be brought to RTB for reviewing.
