Achong Tanjong Mar 17th, 2010 .

The main mission and vision of the Anti-Corruption Bureau is to establish Brunei as one of the top 10 countries in the world that is free from corruption.

Based on a survey conducted by the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), Brunei Darussalam is ranked 39th corruption free nation among 180 countries and placed second in the Global Corruption Barometer Survey conducted by the Transparency International Berlin in Asean countries.

These were highlighted by Pengiran Emran bin Pg Haji Matarsad, Chief of Special Investigator cum Head of Community Relations Unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau during his talk at the Induction Course for new officers and staff at Civil Service Institute (IPA) yesterday.

The talk was attended by 30 new government officers from various government department and agencies.

“Compared to our neighbouring countries, Brunei Darussalam is not as bad. The situation is still under control but our mission and vision is to make Brunei as one of the top 10 countries in the world free from corruption like Singapore – if possible, bring the figure to zero,” he said.

According to him, the talk focussed on matters pertaining to corruption, roles and responsibilities of the Bureau and Prevention of Corruption Act Chapter 131 (Seksyen 40).

He said the Anti-Corruption Bureau has come up with three ways to combat corruption, which are through education, prevention and investigation.

The Bureau Education Section comprises two units; the Community Relationship and Curriculum Development for students.

The talks aim to educate the public particularly government servants on the dangers of corruption, which is like a disease if not prevented and could destroy the nation. Thus, it is important for the public and government servants as well as students to possess basic knowledge on corruption and its consequences.

“Knowing about corruption would prevent them from being corrupt,” said Pg Emran. The talk is to also instil public confidence on corruption.

He said the crime and punishment for government officers and staff under the Anti-Corruption Act Chapter 131 BAB 6 (C) – presenting false documents or claims – could be fine up to B$30,000 and seven years imprisonment.

Also in attendance was the Acting Senior Special Investigation Officer, Abd Nasir bin Dagang.
