NAM NEWS NETWORK Mar 17th, 2010 .

MEXICO CITY, March 17 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – For the third time Mexican President Felipe Calderon visited crime and violence city of Ciudad Juarez in the state of Chihuahua.

Ciudad Juarez hit the headlines again last Sat March 13 when three members of the U.S. Consulate were murdered.

On Feb 16 a group of teenagers were massacred resulting in the government announcing a comprehensive programme against violence and drug-trafficking.

With the visit Calderon keeps his promise of checking personally the events related to crime in the city and fulfilling a strategy to restore peace and order in the territory.

According to a press statement of the President’s office, Calderon presented specific reforms to the “Opportunities Programme” dedicated to fight against poverty.

“Opportunities Programme” designed by the Secretariat for Social Development (Sedesol), began in 2004 to benefit the poor.

According to Sedesol, another 600,000 homes will be incorporated to the programme this year to cover 5.8 million families most of them in urban areas.

Calderon’s visit to northern Ciudad Juarez aroused national interest in view of the increase in violence in the territory despite the government’s offensive against organised crime and drug-trafficking.

A Spokeswoman of the U.S Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in El Paso, Andrea Simmons said that at least seven U.S agencies are taking part in the homicide investigations, the newspaper Milenio Dario reported. President Barack Obama has condemned the murder of the consulate officials. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
