The Brunei Hockian Association this year presented 338 children of its members with certificates of excellence and, out of that total figure, 304 also received cash rewards for their high academic achievements.
This was revealed by Lim Seng Kok, President of the Brunei Hockian Association, in his welcoming remarks during their Chinese New Year celebration held at the ICC.
He said that the aim of giving out such prizes is to encourage and motivate youths to do well in schools. The president also congratulated the recipients and their parents in playing a role and guiding their children to obtain the excellent results.
In the field of education, he added, “The association realises that many children of its members are currently benefiting from government’s assistance in the form of scholarships for further studies within or outside the country.
“Many have graduated or are still currently in the universities. Toward this, the association would like to convey its appreciation and thanks to His Majesty’s Government.
“To implement activities, a fund must also be set up. Therefore, the association would like to thank all sponsorship committees for their efforts in obtaining funds and also thanks the sponsors who have always supported the association,” he added.
Pehin Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Yusof, Minister of Home Affairs, was the event’s guest of honour.
Also present were Pehin Dato Paduka Hj Dani Hj Ibrahim, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, as well as other government officials. In additional to a grand feast, there were an array of performances from the Chung Hwa Middle School students and local artistes.
The highlight of the evening was the cheers and greetings onstage by the Brunei Hockian Association’s committee members.
