Countering drug abuse in sports

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar said that Brunei Darussalam Anti-Doping Committee have taken significant steps whereby the committee have sign on to the World Anti-Doping Code and rectify the Unesco Convention on Drug Abuse in sports as its commitment to the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA).
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the South East Asia Regional Anti-Doping Organisation (SEA RADO) Board Meeting Brunei 2010, which he officiated yesterday, he also noted that Brunei Darussalam are fully supportive of the organisation’s anti doping activities.

Also present at the ceremony was the Director Education and Programme Development of WADA, Rob Koehler.

As doping is detrimental to athletes destroying their future and defaming their countries, there is a need to capitalise on the scientific gains and act to raise the awareness of doping and its dangers along with the consequences it brought to the individuals, society and the country.

“We must communicate effectively that achieving a forged victory through doping is not only unethical and unacceptable, it can also be fatal to the health of the athletes and bring shame to the countries and stressed on the need to educate athletes particularly the young ones that doping has no place in sports.”

Pursuing research in the area of doping control is also vital and identify current doping trends that exist in the society that may grow exponentially if not countered at an early stage.

He also expressed confidence that the joint and collective effort from the South East Asian countries under the direct patronage of WADA to counter the drug abuse in sports in all its forms and at all levels of sports participation would soon produce the desired results.

Among the agenda are the development of RADO including strategic plan and operational plan; anti-doping regulations and code compliance; update from RADO meeting in Kuwait, Tokyo RO report, RADO office update (activities and assistance provided to countries, programmes established for RADO and budget).

The Doping Control Officer (DCO) Training will be held today and tomorrow and will be participated by nearly 30 participants from Asean member countries.

SEA RADO was established in May, 2006 as the coordinating body for eradication programme of doping sports in the Asean region and it comprises members of the Asean countries namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
