WASHINGTON, March 18 (NNN-KUNA): The US welcomed here Wednesday the accord reached by Afghanistan and its Paris Club creditors, including the US, to cancel all debt owed by Afghanistan to club members.
The Paris Club has agreed today to cancel all debt owed to it by Afghanistan, in a deal worth USD 1.026 billion.
State Department Spokesman Mark Toner said that this decision “represents a great achievement for Afghanistan and reflects the international community’s acknowledgment of the great strides the country has made in strengthening its economy.”
“Lifting the debt burden inherited by the Afghan government marks a crucial step on Afghanistan’s road to economic sustainability,” he added.
Toner affirmed that the accord reached will implement Afghanistan’s completion-point treatment under the enhanced Heavily Indebted Poor Countries initiative.
He stressed that the accord also recognized Afghanistan’s performance under its IMF program, and its progress on adopting and implementing economic reforms in a tremendously challenging environment.
