A prawn seller at the Gadong wet market who stole one box containing six packets of “Milo” was fined B$700, or to serve a month in prison in default, by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Saufi bin Seruji, 24, pleaded guilty to committing theft of $68.91 worth of goods on February 23, at about 7.15pm, at Perusahaan Nasa Sdn Bhd in Kampong Bebatik, Jalan Mulaut Masin.
According to Prosecuting Officer Ak Shahyzul Khairuddien Pg Abd Rahman, the defendant was seen walking down the stairs from a store room at the back of the convenience store by the manager of the shop. The manager then confronted the defendant, asking him what he had been doing in the storeroom. The defendant said that he was looking for a toilet.
The defendant, who earns between $25 and $30 a day, then picked up the box of “Milo” and attempted to run away with it. However, with the help of two neighbours, the shop manager was able to restrain the defendant.
