UNITED NATIONS, March 19 (NNN-KUNA) — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon “condemns” Thursday’s rocket attack from Hamas-controlled Gaza into Israel which killed a Thai worker, his press office said in a statement.
“All such acts of terror and violence against civilians are totally unacceptable and contrary to international law,” the statement said.
Thursday’s attack, the third in 24 hours after two rockets landed near Sderot, comes as EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton visits Gaza.
Ban is currently in Moscow to attend the Mideast Quartet Friday. He is also scheduled to visit Israel and Gaza over the weekend.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman reportedly told Ban over the phone earlier this week that Israel expects a “more objective and constructive approach from the international community,” in reference to Ban’s condemnation of the recent Israeli decision to build 1,600 settlements in East Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, the Al-Aqsa Martyr’s Brigades, the military wing of Fatah, claimed responsibility for firing rockets at southern Israel.
The Ansar Al-Sunna Brigades also said in a statement that its activists targeted the city of Ashkelon.
The Saladdin Brigades, the military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, claimed responsibility for launching a home-made projectile at the Israeli town of Sderot in the western Negev.
Palestinian fractions are firing rockets in retaliation for Israel’s violation of holy sites in Jerusalem.
On Wednesday, Palestinian rockets wounded a number of Israelis in Sderot.
