Over 70 students of Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College who excelled in various academic fields were feted for their achievements during a prize presentation ceremony held yesterday at the college’s auditorium. The prizes was presented by the guest of honour, Director of Examinations, Ministry of Education, Awg Hj Mohd Masa Masdi Mohd Sa’idun.

The ceremony began with the singing of the National Anthem followed by the recital of surah al-fatihah and a doa. A welcoming note was then delivered by the Acting Principal, Dyg Joanna Lim, who amongst all noted that the recognition and acknowledgement of these achievements serve as an inspiration for every other student to attempt similar feats. She stressed that it was all a result of hard work and dedication.

“Education is not only about intelligence, but character as well. No matter what course of study you engage in, I encourage all of you to maximise your strengths and make use of all opportunities that are made available to you and be the best that you can be. As long as you continue to possess the right attitude, and determine exactly what kind of a future you are aiming for, you are bound to be rewarded for the successes.”

She further advised them to be prepared to challenge themselves to do more and that what they have accomplished so far is just an early indication of the potential they have to achieve in life.

The achievement of the college’s students in the past has always resulted in the college ranking very highly amongst sixth form centres nationwide.

The guest of honour also added that last year saw 51 of the college’s students succeed in getting at least two distinctions, which greatly helped in placing the college in the top ranks with other well-performing institutions.

Students and teachers were congratulated for their hard work and the contribution they have put in to making the college an excellent pre-university institution. At the same time he also called upon students who face difficulties in their studies not to give up or be easily discouraged as opportunities for them will always be available as long as they strive to put more effort into excelling in their BGCE ‘A’ Level examinations.

The ceremony saw 20 students awarded as ‘Top Students Overall’, two as ‘Top Achieving Hostellites’, 22 achievers by subject in their BGCE ‘A’ Levels and 22 ‘Top Achievers’ by subjects in their Lower Six end of year examinations.

Academic departments were also honoured with excellence awards for helping to attain good examination results between 2005 and 2009 in the academic fields of further-mathematics, accounting, business studies, English (thinking-skills), chemistry, biology and Islamic studies (Syariah). The Arts and Design, Malay Language, Mathematics (Further Maths) and English Departments were also awarded for being top achieving academic departments among Sixth form institutions in 2009.
