Rasamas yesterday introduced to members of the press their latest dish, Hainan Chicken Rice, which they hope will prove to be popular in the Sultanate.
“This is the new Hainan Chicken Rice, which comes from ‘Sioknya Rasamas!’ – a reality TV programme on Malaysia’s TV3 broadcasting channel,” announced Del Goh, the General Manager of Rasamas, yesterday.
“People would come in with their recipes and compete for the best. And this one is the first that has been chosen by Rasamas. It comes in three different sets, ranging from $7, and also comes with a lot of side dishes.”
“Our prices are slightly higher than other chicken rice shops, but still reasonable. I have tasted the chicken, and it is very tasty. So, we are confident to launch it here in Brunei,” Goh said. The chicken rice is a dish of Chinese origins, most commonly associated with Malaysian or Singaporean cuisine, although it is also commonly sold in neighbouring Thailand, and found in Hainan, China, itself.
It is based on the well-known Hainanese dish called Wenchang Chicken, and due to its roots in Hainan cuisine and its adoption by the Hainanese overseas Chinese population in the Nanyang area (present-day Southeast Asia), the version found in the Singaporean region combines elements of Hainanese and Cantonese cuisines, along with culinary preferences in the Southeast Asian region.
The dish was popularised in Singapore in the 1950s by Moh Lee Twee, whose Swee Kee Chicken Rice Restaurant operated from 1947 to 1997.
