AMMAN, March 20 (NNN-KUNA) — Jordan called on the international community Saturday to boost its support of Iraqi refugees on its lands.
Spokesman for the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation Essam Al-Majali said that Minister Jaffar Hassan called on UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Erika Feller to ask the international community for more support to Iraqi refugees within the Jordanian borders.
He told KUNA that minister informed Feller on the Jordanian government’s support and backup to the Iraqis living on its lands.
Al-Majali also informed the UNHCR official on the problems facing Jordan in terms of support the Iraqis, calling on the UN commission to exert more effort in helping the Jordanian government on this matter.
Feller affirmed, on her part, that the international community would work on measures to help Iraqis within Jordan, aiding the Jordanian government on this noble quest.
Official statistics issued by the Jordanian government puts the number of Iraqis in Jordan at 400,000, while according to civil institutions around 700, 000 had fled from Iraq due to the worsening security conditions there. — NNN-KUNA
