Sport Relief for charity in Brunei

Lyna Mohamad Mar 20th, 2010 .

British High Commission (BHC) staff and Jerudong International School (JIS) students took part in a charity “fun run” to raise money for Pusat Ehsan in the charity Sport Relief , one of the largest charity events in UK.

The British High Commissioner to Brunei Rob Fenn, and members of the UK Trade and Investment as this UK charity participated in The Sport Relief Mile on March 19-20.

In cities, towns and villages, over half a million people, celebrities and children, the old and the young alike, the able bodied and the disabled, sports fanatics and armchair fans, ran, jogged, walked, wheeled or even bounced a Mile for charity. The light-hearted event had contestants in fancy dresses. Behind the laughter is a commitment to raise millions of pounds for good causes all over the world.

This year, staff from British Embassies, high commissions and consulates all over the world joined. Set up in 1985, Sport Relief, a fundraising campaign organised by the British charity, Comic Relief, has raised over half a billion pounds to help vulnerable people in the UK and the world’s poorest countries.

Each year Comic Relief switches between using comedy (Red Nose Day) and sport (Sport Relief) to give people an opportunity to raise funds for those less fortunate than themselves while in the UK Sport Relief has become a fixture in the national calendar with thousands of people taking part in local and national activities across the country.

BHC and JIS decided the money raised in Brunei should go to Pusat Ehsan, a non-government and not-for-profit organisation committed to give quality education and rehabilitation services for people coping with physical and mental disabilities. The British High Commissioner said Sport Relief is already a major event in the UK and this weekend, his colleagues all around the world are taking part in the Sport Relief Mile.
