One hundred and two KACA (Association of Handicapped Children of Brunei) members yesterday gathered at the Belait branch to showcase their talents at the 2nd National Annual Sports Meet.
KACA President Pg Hj Mohd Yassin bin Pg Hj Ahmad was the guest of honour at the event.

In his welcoming remarks, KACA Managing Director Hj Awg Abd Alim bin Haji Awg Othman said the sports meet aimed to foster closer relations between the parents and KACA staff, to further promote sporting talents, and also uncover participants’ potential in representing the sports competitions for disabled members at the national and regional levels.

He also reiterated the main objectives of KACA programmes, which is to create a special learning institute providing rehabilitation and educational facilities based on Early Development and Special Education from Pre-School to Primary levels (one – 12 years old).

Touching on the issue of funds, he revealed that ever since early 2009, KACA has received financial contributions from private sectors, various associations at home and overseas, and also generous individuals.

To raise more money, KACA has initiated several activities such as walkathons, open day and charity shows.

To date, KACA (Belait branch) – which officially opened on December 3 last year – has 20 members undergoing the daily programmes and activities.

Numerous activities have been lined up for this year, including visit by parents, KACA staffs and volunteers visiting centres for handicapped people overseas, ongoing handicraft project for KACA mothers, KACA Mother’s Day celebration in conjunction with International Mother’s Day on May 13, and the KACA Funding Project 2010 – 2015 which was recently launched on March 11.

Other activities in the pipeline include – students participating in community service activities at the centre throughout the year, Hari Raya celebrations, and the KACA Smile competition, Hj Awg Alim concluded.

At the event, KACA members competed in a variety of sport activities such as the target throw, filling water into a bottle using sponge, sweets hunting, bucket fishing and collection of balls according to colours.

Meanwhile, KACA will soon celebrate Worldwide Down Syndrome Day, which was marked on March 21.
