A group of 25 UBD students pursuing their degrees in General Science Education, went on a study visit to the Narcotics Control Bureau located at Jalan Tungku Gadong. The aim of the visit was to learn specifically the types of drugs most commonly used in Brunei Darussalam.
Upon arrival, the students were welcomed by Senior Narcotics Officer, Pg Hj Ali bin Pg Hj Samsudin, and Assistant Narcotics Officer, Dyg Wasulhana binti Hj Sudin. An educational video was played for the benefit of the students.

This was followed by a briefing delivered by Dyg Wasulhana, with regards to the common substances that are misused in Brunei including heroin, crystal meth, painkillers, ecstasy, marijuana, codeine, and diazepam. She also highlighted the consequences, health risks and severe penalties for those with drugs in their possessions. The punishments can vary and range from a fine, imprisonment or both for drug offenders. The adverse side effects and even potential death of consuming these lethal chemicals were mentioned and showed via a presentation.

The students were also warned against international drug syndicates, the strategies and ploys utilised by syndicates in order to lure and ensnare potential drug mules who very often are unaware that they are transporting contraband. She also conveyed the bureau’s strong reminder to the public to be very cautious of a syndicate of west African origin specifically. This syndicate has been operating around this region and has been targeting vulnerable nationals including Bruneians for the purpose of trafficking drugs worldwide.

The students then toured the bureau’s drugs exhibition gallery.

At the end of the visit, the bureau urged the students and other members of the public to report suspicious behaviour or conduct in their area as well as to report drug activities by calling the NCB hotline at 8777444.
