Donate to Chile, Haiti victims fund via mobile phone

DONORS now have an easy method to send money towards the Humanitarian Fund for the Haitian and Chilean Earthquake Victims via their mobile phones.

The Department of Community Development (Japem), Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB), DST-Group and B-Mobile Communication have organised the SMS Brunei Prihatin project for the fund.

Those wishing to aid earthquake victims can now do so by sending a text message.

Until May 22, DST and B-mobile customers may donate $1, $5, $10, $15 or $20 to the fund by texting BANTU and then the amount they wished to donate and send to 38111. For example, texting BANTU20 will donate $20.

The project was launched yesterday by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Ahmad Hj Jumat at the ministry’s headquarters.

Also present was Acting Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Othman.

On January 12, a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake. About 230,000 people were killed and 300,000 others injured.

In Chile, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake occurred off its coast on February 27.

About 500 people died and hundreds of thousands of homes were damaged. Zareena Amiruddin
