Residents living in and around Kg Sungai Teraban in the Belait District and visitors can now enjoy the added convenience of two newly built recreational huts and a suspension bridge over Sungai Dua, thanks to private contributions from three residents of the village.
The new structures were officially opened yesterday morning by the Belait District Officer, Awg Hj Jamain bin Momin.
The three residents – Alex Tiong Ming Chuong, Johnny Cheong and Yap Fok Ho – each contributed to the B$35,000 project that involved the construction of three recreational huts and a suspension bridge over the river. The project is seen as a bid to promote healthy outdoor recreational activities for villagers and general public.
According to Alex Tiong, many people frequent the site every weekend, especially fishing enthusiasts. He said the area has gained popularity among village residents as an ideal spot for crab fishing.
“Therefore this prompted ideas for us to turn the area into a recreational site to draw not only villagers, but also members of the general public to the site to enjoy the scenic beauty of the river overlooking the South China Sea,” said Alex.
Plans are under way to build additional huts along the river to allow residents to sell and showcase village food products at the recreational site, he added.
During yesterday’s launch, villagers also took part in a “gotong-royong” activity, cleaning the area and beautifying the recreational huts with paint and varnish.
The district officer later unveiled the signboard for the recreational structures, and another notice board to warn visitors of the law against littering under the Minor Offences Act in a bid to promote cleanliness at the recreational area.
